Abstract

The subject matter of eleven of Francisco Umbral’s novels deals with the years he spent in Valladolid. He reminisces about places in the city, converting them into a symbolic reality which marks his formative years. We have grouped the geographical points of the city into four routes that construct the character’s identity and convictions: these have to do with humiliation and alienation (social space), sexual initiation (moral space), the quest for a life project (cultural space) and ambition related to the world of work. Space is the characterizing element common to all these works.
