Abstract

Carmen Martín Gaite combined her dedication to novels and essays with the publication of some three hundred articles in newspapers and magazines for half a century, from 1949, when she arrived in Madrid with the intention of completing her doctorate, until 2000, a few months before her death. Most of these articles were literary critiques, her main work in the media, especially in the pages of Diario 16, where she contributed weekly for three and a half years. However, she also wrote commentaries on current events, biographies, historiographical essays, and even a chronicle and a peculiar interview. In them, we discover her slow pace, her interest in the interlocutor, and the conversational style of her writing. This work aims to expose Carmen Martín Gaite’s career as a columnist through quotes from her texts published in the press.
