Abstract

The term "universal literature" was proposed by Goethe. Alfonso Reyes talks about the universality of some Latin American authors, such as Octavio Paz, Jorge Luis Borges and Gabriel García Márquez, due to their universal topics and the globalization of their works. Both Franco Moretti and Pascale Casanova study and propose the universality of letters and literature despite the fact that many other scholars have different views and do not consider this global aspect of literature. For example, Sánchez-Prado criticizes both in some aspects and, after him, other scholars have done the same, commenting on the thesis of these two authors to put them in perspective. In the reviews, the context of each writer is taken into account in order to reflect further if there really is a universal literature and what it is about.
