Abstract

This article exposes the opinion of Menéndez Pelayo regarding authors of the Golden Age. Three works stand out in which the author spoke of the Spanish lyric of the Golden Age: Horacio en España, written in 1877; in his 1881 speech, read on March 6 before the Royal Spanish Academy; and in the chapters of the Historia de las ideas estéticas en España,, begun in 1883, focusing on the 16th and 17th centuries. Also noteworthy is the opinion of two authors, Gerardo Diego and Dámaso Alonso, about Menéndez Pelayo and his studies. Although Menéndez Pelayo was considered a scholar, the authors belonging to the Generation of 27 differed in the undervalued conception made by the scholar of Góngora.
