The classification of the works of Lope de Vega by Marcelino Menéndez Pelayo

Abstract

This article presents the classification made by Menéndez Pelayo of the works of Lope de Vega. In 1890 began the publication of the dramatic works of Lope de Vega, by the Royal Spanish Academy. Menéndez Pelayo organizes the classification around three axes: hierarchical worldview, which defines its nuclei and periphery and places the works of historical theme at the center of the system thanks to the characteristics that have thematic; ideologically and generically. It is a very broad classification, due in part to the ideological force that Pelayo grants to this group of works, force that for him increases the positive sense of Lopesco theater and becomes its true essence.
