From the summer of 1871, when they met in Santander, Pereda and Galdós struck up a deep and lasting friendship, maintained by mail or during Galdós’s frequent visits to Santander. Since then, this has been the most interesting of all Pereda’s correspondences, as much for the variety of topics as for the sincerity with which both manifest their ideas about religion and politics.
