Celin or the galdosian wonders

Abstract

Studying Celín, it becomes clear that Galdós’ blunt narrative style nearly always swings between the allegorical and the magical, while distancing itself from anything to do with romantically-based fantasy. In its aesthetic conception, there is no room for characters associated with such fantasy (ghosts, the living dead or apparitions), nor for the feelings of uncertainty or dread associated with that literary genre. Moreover, in this tale and in most of those written by Galdós, a positive view of the world triumphs, in which oversensitivity and sentimentalism are banished.
