Jose Escobar graduated in Philosophy and Letters from the University of Salamanca and, after some time in Germany, he traveled to Canada to work as a professor at two important universities in the country. He met Salvador García Castañeda, author of this obituary, in Italy, and traveled to many places to give lectures on his specialty: Spanish Romanticism. He was a renowned Hispanist whose works are still consulted for the analysis of the subject. In addition, he founded and directed the International Center for Studies on Hispanic Romanticism and the Spanish Literature Society of the 19th century.
