Nigel Dennis, José Bergamín, English Hispanist, Literature, Hispanism, Investigator, Canadian Magazine of Hispanic StudiesAbstract
Nigel Dennis was an English Hispanist who studied at Cambridge and received his doctorate doing his thesis on the figure of José Bergamín. He was always interested in Spanish culture and literature, especially from the first third of the 20th century. He worked as a teacher and researcher in universities, first in Canada, although he always went to visit Spain and there he directed the Canadian Journal of Hispanic Studies, and later he was a professor in Scotland. His studies and analyzes were not only outstanding in terms of content due to his endless curiosity about Hispanism, but also in terms of form, since, being an avid reader, he handled linguistic and stylistic resources very well, something that greatly enriched his writings. He was in charge of compiling correspondence that Bergamín had shared with Unamuno, Manuel de Falla and María Zambrano, since he became interested in literary creation and continued to delve deeper into José Bergamín.
