Elias L. Rivers was a Hispanist specialized in the Spanish Golden Age. He was American and was a professor at universities in his country. Before getting his doctorate with a thesis on Francisco de Aldana, he studied Greek and Latin and was forced to learn Mandarin as well, since he was sent as a soldier to the Chinese border with Burma during World War II. After the war, he was able to land in Spain and meet prominent figures such as Dámaso Alonso and Rafael Lapesa. He was a critical analyst of the Siglo de Oro and was in charge, at the end of his life, of translating several works of the Siglo de Oro into English. He remembers him with great esteem for the work he did and for being a great person.
