This obituary pays tribute to James Whiston, who died in 2017. He was a great Hispanist and an excellent gallerist. His academic life was always linked to Trinity College in Dublin. There he studied his two degrees in English and Hispanic Philology, and there he obtained in 1969 the Gold Medal student; there he obtained his doctorate in 1975 and was director of the Spanish Department. He showed in his works a historical-textual interest and studied several authors of the nineteenth century. He was vice-president (1996-99) and president of the International Association of Galdosistas (2006-2008), director of Anales Galdosianos. Finally, in 2002 he became General Editor of the Bulletin of Spanish Studies and in 2010 a member of the Royal Irish Academy.
