Abstract

This review comments on the edition of Emilia Pardo Bazán's travel book, which she wrote starting in 1873, when she traveled through Europe with her parents and her husband. She later in her life will take up this literary genre with other trips she makes, although this first writing was never published. José Manuel González Herrán is the one who makes the introduction to this book and includes, of course, the context of the moment in which it was written and why it came to light at a different moment than its production. The most remarkable thing is to extract the ideological and aesthetic perception of the writer, focusing on how she describes what she sees, rather than stopping at the tourist overtones of her story. For example, with some of her comments, her nationalist vision and her adherence to the Old Regime on occasion are rescued, although later she would distance herself from these conceptions. Thanks to the fact that the original has been preserved, the poems that Pardo Bazán wrote during her travels can be read, so this edition is very complete and helps to understand the context in which the writer found herself in all areas of her life.
