This paper aims to revaluate the originality and significance of Unamuno’s fictional experimentation by exploring different iterations among Spanish avant-garde novels of one of Niebla’s major metafictional features—the autonomous character; that is, characters who are aware of their fictional status and interact with their creators within their literary worlds.
