Abstract

The article focuses on the Revolution of 1868 as a reference in Pereda’s literary creation. The revolution of 1868 and the Democratic Sexenio constitute a fundamental milestone in the modernization of Spain from the political, economic and cultural point of view in the fields of education, the press and literary creation. Pereda criticizes and degrades the most relevant events, institutions and political figures of the Regime, as well as certain legal provisions of the Government; he criticizes political corruption and caciquismo. In the same way, he exposes his traditionalist, anti-liberal and neo-Catholic thought and ideology.
