Abstract

In Memoria de la melancolía (1970) by María Teresa León, Buenos Aires plays an important part since it is one of the cities in which the author lived her exile. Taking into account the position from which the author constructs her enunciation –an exiled writer– we explore how León's text weaves together affective urban cartographies that account for the process of adaptation and permanence in the new city. Based on the textual analysis of passages in which León specifically reconstructs her memories of Buenos Aires, we investigate how the drawing of cartographies constitutes a procedure for suturing the subjectivity torn apart by the experience of exile.
